
First European Security Seminar-North Happening Now at the Marshall Center

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (July 9, 2018) – The first-ever European Security Seminar - North is being held at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies from July 9 to 13.

Focus: The Arctic: Risks and Opportunities for Europe and North America; Developing Strategies to Address Contemporary Security Challenges on Europe's Northern Flank
Seminar Description: The one-week seminar on the Arctic is embedded into the series of European Security Seminars (ESS) consisting of ESS-South, ESS-East and now, ESS-North. The ESS-N primarily looks at the Arctic and in the broader sense also at the Baltic Sea. Currently, it is planned to have a series of five events over the next five years, with one seminar at the Marshall Center each year and one community of interest workshop in the area in the following year.

Deputy Course Director: Lt. Col. (GS) Michael Schätzlein
Class Composition: There are 26 participants from 11nations. Of the participants, 17 are males and nine are female. There are 10 military participants and 16 civilians.
Origins: This is the first ESS-North seminar. The successes of the European Security Seminar – South and East are the catalyst for this one-week seminar examining the Arctic Region.
