U.S. Army V Corps Commanding General visits the Marshall Center

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (August 4, 2021) – U.S. Army Lt. Gen. John Kolasheski, V Corps Commanding General, was welcomed to the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies on July 29 by Marshall Center Director U.S. Air Force retired Maj. Gen. Barre Seguin.

During his discussions with the Marshall Center staff and faculty, Kolasheski described the purpose behind last year’s reactivation of U.S. Army V Corps and its role in Europe in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command.  He highlighted the importance of working with partner nations and described the added capability that V Corps brings to the current force structure.

Kolasheski met with Seguin, U.S. Deputy Director retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Dieter Bareihs, German Deputy Director retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Helmut Dotzler, and Dr. Andrew Michta, dean of the of College of International Security Studies, as well as Marshall Center faculty.  The roundtable discussion focused on Marshall Center initiatives and security perspectives in the European region. 

U.S. Army Col. Matt Sousa, Deputy Director of the Marshall Center Security Studies Program, provided Kolasheski with an overview on the Marshall Center’s new Russian Way of War course.  Professor Joseph Vann spoke about the importance of promoting structural reforms in the transition countries that make up key partner nations.  Dr. Graeme Herd, chair of the Research and Policy Analysis Department briefed on the nature of the academic research the Marshall Center is conducting on Russia.  

Dr. Matthew Rhodes, chair of the Areas Studies Department, discussed the current challenges in Southeast Europe and highlighted a new regional orientation course focused on Southeast Europe for staff officers assigned to U.S. Army Europe and Africa.  German Army Lt. Col. Faulk Tettweiler provided Kolasheski with the German perspective on multilateral approaches to regional security and Dr. Cueneyt Guerer spoke about the evolving role of Turkey in the region.  

Seguin thanked Kolasheski for visiting and stressed his commitment to providing Marshall Center support to U.S. Army V Corps as it stands up its efforts in the region.
