Program on Regional Security Studies (PRSS)
Program on Regional Security Studies (PRSS)
Introduction
The five-week program shall achieve a 360-degree insight into security developments and interdependencies in Europe and its periphery. It analyzes wider European security in the context of renewed great power competition and in view of the wars in Ukraine and the Near East. It examines the strategic objectives and instruments of global and regional revisionist powers, with emphasis on ways hybrid and irregular warfare methods challenge rules-based order and Euro-Atlantic values.
Key Aspects
The Program on Regional Security Studies (PRSS) course program focuses on examining the influence of local, regional and international actors on regional conflicts, and on regular, irregular and hybrid challenges that occur in Europe and at its northern, eastern and southern peripheries.
These conflicts and tensions lead to a growing global disorder and, as a result, greater regionalization of regulatory systems.
Attention is also given to the roles of the United Nations, European Union, NATO, African Union and other international organizations and the civil society entities involved in regional security dynamics.
The analysis of this overall environment and current developments provides the framework for exploring and understanding shared regional security challenges, enabling participants to contribute to the rethinking and reshaping of security and defense in Europe and beyond.
PRSS aims to enhance the professional development of mid-level and senior officers and civilian government officials by providing them with background knowledge of strategic competition, relevant regional security issues and contributing to their overall understanding of key security actors and their modus operandi that impact security in and around Europe. Furthermore, it enables the exchange of ideas and best practices to enhance collective security.
Objectives
- Deepen understanding of ways great power competition and transnational security issues as hybrid and irregular warfare shape contemporary regional security.
- Advance knowledge and comparative analysis of security challenges and conflict in and around Europe; in the Balkan, Baltic, High North, Black Sea, Caucasus and Middle East North Africa (MENA) areas.
- Assess current and potential national and international policy responses.
