GCMC's German Partners Host Friendship Shooting Event for U.S. Counterparts in Murnau

GARMSICH-PARTENKIRCHEN (July 15, 2024) –  The German contingent of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies (GCMC) extended a warm invitation to their U.S. partners for a day of camaraderie and competition July 15 at a Friendship Shooting event held in nearby Murnau. The highlight of the event was the opportunity to compete for the prestigious Bundeswehr Schützenschnur, a marksmanship badge awarded by the German armed forces.

The Schützenschnur, a historic and highly regarded military award, is granted to soldiers who demonstrate exceptional proficiency in marksmanship. The badge features a braided cord with a silver or gold emblem, indicating the level of expertise achieved. Participants at today's event aimed to meet the rigorous standards required to earn this esteemed accolade, showcasing their skills in precision shooting.

The day's activities included various shooting exercises, designed to test participants' accuracy and consistency across multiple disciplines. German and U.S. soldiers competed side by side, fostering a spirit of friendly competition and mutual respect. The event served as a unique opportunity for participants to engage in cross-cultural exchanges and strengthen the bonds between the two allied nations.

As the sun began to set, the event concluded with a medal ceremony recognizing those who successfully met the criteria for the Schützenschnur. German officials awarded the badges to deserving participants, acknowledging their marksmanship achievements.

Following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a Friendship BBQ, generously sponsored by the U.S. partners. The BBQ provided a relaxed and festive atmosphere for participants to celebrate their achievements, share experiences, and further deepen the ties of friendship and cooperation that are the cornerstone of the GCMC's mission.

The event was not only a testament to the strong partnership between the German and U.S. components of the GCMC, but also a celebration of the shared values and commitments that underpin their collaborative efforts in promoting security and stability.
