Southern Watch Series

Virtual Course / 1500 to 1630 CET

The Southern Watch Series is an initiative of the Marshall Center’s European Security Seminar – South (ESS-S). It will start with a first session on Somalia on 31  March 2021, 1500 to 1630 CET. Somalia is facing an unprecedented set of challenges. We will talk about the political impasse over presidential elections, the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, and the evolving terrorist threat posed by Al-Shabaab. We will also discuss Somalia’s position in an increasingly unstable region due to maritime border disagreements, the Tigray conflict, and tensions over the Nile River Dam. We’ll sketch some scenarios regarding migration, terrorism, state fragility, and great power rivalries in Somalia and its neighborhood, and we’ll discuss policy options for Europe and the US. The second half of the webinar will open up to all participants for questions, comments, and discussion.

The Marshall Center’s objective is to bring together the best and most capable rising defense and security experts from a variety of government ministries. Each course is geared toward a specific combination of mid- to senior-level career military officers and civilian government officials of equivalent rank. We strive for a balanced and diverse participant body, policy-makers and practitioners, men and women.

Participants greatly benefit from our programs and the opportunity to network with like-minded professionals as well as add value to an ongoing dialog on security and defense related topics. Our goal is connect the right people to create a positive change for a more stable world.
