In the heart of Berlin, the historic Hotel Adlon Kempinski was the host to the annual NATO Talk Conference. Held Nov. 6, 2023, the conference, titled "The West Under Pressure - New Challenges for NATO," brought together experts and leaders from Germany, Israel and Ukraine to focus on critical contemporary security issues. Co-organized by the German Atlantic Association and the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, the event served as an important platform for high-level discourse, networking and exchange of ideas related to NATO and broader security concerns.

Marshall Center Director, retired Maj. Gen. Barre Seguin, and President Christian Schmidt, the High Representative for Bosnia Hercegovina and former federal minister, provided impactful opening and closing remarks, setting the stage for the day's conversations.

“At this time in history, discussions on the critical issues facing the transatlantic community and the security architecture in Europe, are essential. War has returned to Europe with Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, while at the same time, we are facing an ever-changing global landscape,” said Seguin.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius delivered the keynote address emphasizing Germany's strong commitment to NATO, and stressing the urgent need for the Bundeswehr to become combat-ready ("kriegstüchtig") at the earliest. Pistorius engaged the audience in a comprehensive question and answer session following his remarks. 

The multiple panels of the conference covered many pressing topics. From the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine to the recent attack by Hamas on Israel, and NATO's current challenges to a broader exploration of the West and strategic competition, the discussions were both comprehensive and thought-provoking. Moderated and facilitated by Marshall Center subject matter experts, Col. Dr. Frank Hagemann, Dr. Graeme Herd, Dr. Katrin Bastian, and other experts, the conference discussions attracted a diverse audience, with over 400 physical attendees, close to 700 participants on Zoom, and more than 1,000 viewers following the YouTube livestream throughout the day. The discussions emphasized Russia's persistent threat to European security and the need for continued military assistance to Ukraine. Post-Russia's aggression in 2022, there was a notable shift in the German mindset, with a call for increased realism and military readiness within German society.

The event highlighted the unwavering support of both the U.S. and Germany for Israel after the recent attack by Hamas. It underscored the importance of maintaining support for Ukraine without compromising assistance to other regions in crisis.

A consensus emerged that Ukraine's security is best guaranteed within the NATO alliance. NATO itself was affirmed as the key actor for European deterrence and collective defense. Germany's commitment to the permanent deployment of a brigade to Lithuania further solidified this commitment.
