GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (May 4, 2021) — On April 27, sixty-four German-speaking Alumni Association members reunited virtually to discuss how to tackle coronavirus challenges.  Participants represented the wider security architecture from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia and Ukraine.

Christina Moritz, head of the German Alumni chapter, and retired German Air Force Brigadier General Helmut Dotzler, Marshall Center German Deputy Director, opened the event and introduced the two keynote speakers, Roderich Kiesewetter, Member of German Federal Parliament and Dr. Wölfel, head of Institute for Microbiology of the German Armed Forces. Dr. Sebastian von Münchow, course director of the European Security Seminar on EU-NATO Cooperation, provided an overview on the recent steps to integrate COVID-19 related research into Marshall Center programs and research endeavors.

The alumni engaged in a lively and beneficial discussion on Russia and China’s malign vaccine diplomacy, the relation between climate and pandemics, societal resilience, the need to analyze lessons learned, and concrete suggestions to reform Germany’s security design.

The Marshall Center engages its alumni to sustain networks of security professionals, to inform graduates on current activities and explain up-coming events which may be of interest for the target audience. The German alumni are planning for a follow-up reunion in the fall.
