ATHENS (Oct. 7, 2014) – The George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies partnered with the Hellenic National Police and Coast Guard to conduct a multi-regional workshop with its European and North African partner nations in the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea regions Sept. 23 to 25 here.

The three-day event was titled Developing Border Protection Management Strategies in Counter to Illicit Migration, Trafficking and Terrorist Networks Seminar. The U.S. Ambassador to Greece David Pearce, the German Ambassador to Greece Dr. Peter Schoof, and Commodore Ioannis Karageorgopoulos, director of the Hellenic Coast Guard Security Directorate in Greece, attended the seminar. Subject matter experts and participating nations had productive discussions revolving around the current conflicts in Syria and Iraq and best practices and contemporary challenges with foreign fighter movements, countering narcotics and illicit trafficking, illicit migration and migrant smuggling, and strategy on border movements.

Marshall Center faculty who gave presentations during this seminar were U.S. Army Col. Robert Duggleby and Professor Steve Monaco.
