Mejreme Asllani

This article analyzes Russian and Chinese disinformation operations in the Western Balkans. Russia uses historical and cultural ties, particularly with Serbian-speaking populations, to disseminate anti-Western narratives. China, leveraging Belt and Road Initiative investments and media partnerships, employs soft and so-called sharp power to enhance its regional influence. While direct Sino-Russian coordination remains unproven, their messaging aligns on key issues, including Russia’s war against Ukraine and NATO criticism, with China adopting Russian disinformation tactics, especially on social media. Crucially, domestic actors, especially in Serbia, amplify these narratives through controlled media outlets, fostering pro-Russia and pro-China sentiments thereby eroding support for Euro-Atlantic integration. This article highlights the complex interplay of external influence and local enablers, emphasizing the threat to regional stability and democratic values amid Russia's war against Ukraine.
