Colonel (GS) Stefan Hinz is a military professional with a background in air defense and military politics. He arrived at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in July 2020.

Before his assignment at the Marshall Center, he was the Senior National Representative and Director German Program and European Security Course (ESC) at the Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP) from 2014 on.

Colonel (GS) Hinz joined the Bundeswehr in July 1982. After graduation as Diplom-Kaufmann (univ) at the Bundeswehr University in Munich in December, 1986, he was trained at the Control and Reporting Center (CRC) Messstetten in Air Surveillance and Fighter Control. After various staff, leadership, and operational assignments he became a Master Controller of the CRC.

From 1995 until 1997, he attended the 40th Air Force General Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr) in Hamburg.

Since then, Colonel (GS) Hinz has served in various assignments within the Air Force, the Ministry of Defense – Armed Forces Staff – and the Federal Foreign Office (AA 202) in Berlin.

In 2008, he returned to Messstetten as the Commander of the CRC (SWEETAPPLE), where he served until 2010.

He is fluent in German and English, has a good knowledge of French, and a fair knowledge of Italian and Dutch.

Stefan is an alumnus of the Senior Course 111 NATO Defense College, Rome.
