Brigadier General Luigi Francavilla

George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies

Brig. Gen. Luigi Francavilla is a professor of international security studies on the multinational faculty at “George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies”.

Prior to his assignment here, General Francavilla was the 14th Commander of the Italian Army Aviation.

Brigadier General Luigi Francavilla was born on the 28th May 1957 in Bari.

In 1976, he joined the Army in 1976 and attended the 158th Class at the Military Academy in Modena, where he was commissioned as Officer.

In 1978, BG Francavilla was assigned to the “School for Applied Military Science” in Turin where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Science.

After being graduated, General Francavilla, was assigned, as 1st Lieutenant, to the 21st Infantry Battalion in which he served first as Platoon Leader and later as Company Commander.

In 1985 he attended the 16th Helicopter Pilot Course after which he was assigned as a pilot to the 23rd Army Aviation Battalion in Vercelli.

In 1990 and 1994, General Francavilla attended the 116th Staff Officer and Senior Staff Officer Course at the “War College” in Civitavecchia achieving the qualification of General Staff Officer. In 1992 he attended the Argentinian “War College”, in Buenos Aires-Argentina.

Assigned to the General Army Staff in Rome, he served as staff officer and chief of the Army Aviation Section in the Logistic Department.

From 1996 to 1997 General Francavilla was the Commander of the 11th Army Aviation Battalion based in Viterbo.

From 2000 to 2002, he commanded the 66th Airmobile Infantry Regiment in Forlì. During his assignment, the regiment was deployed to Kosovo as part of the “Joint Guardian” NATO operation.

From 2003 to 2006, General Francavilla was assigned, as defence attaché, to the Italian embassy in Skopje-FYROM.

Back to Italy, he became the Commander of the Army Aviation Brigade, and on the 07.05.2007 he came to be the Commander of the Army Aviation Training Centre, in Viterbo.

From 2008 to 2010, General Francavilla was the 5th Commander of the “Friuli” Airmobile Brigade home based in Bologna.

From 6th November 2009 to 6th May 2010 the Brigade was deployed in Lebanon as Joint Task Force Lebanon and General Francavilla was posted as  commander of UNIFIL Sector West.

On the 3rd December 2010, he was assigned in Viterbo as Army Aviation Brigade Commander.

Brigadier General Luigi Francavilla assumed duties as the 14th Commander of the Italian Army Aviation in January 2014.

General Francavilla is a Command Pilot on various aircraft types with over 1200 flight hours and flight instructor on AB206 and A109.

General Francavilla has a master’s in strategic science from the University of Study in Turin, and a master's degree in Peace Keeping and Security Studies from the University of Rome. He speaks fluent English, and Spanish

General Francavilla holds various decorations and awards, including:

  • Army Silver Cross for Meritorious Service (Lebanon);
  • Army Bronze Cross for Meritorious Service (Kosovo);
  • Officer of the Meritorious Order of the Italian Republic;
  • Slovenian, Multinational Military Cooperation Medal.
  • Gold Medal for 25 year of Service;
  • Gold Medal for "Lunga Navigazione Aerea":
  • the Mauritian Medal;
  • NATO Medals  for Operation in  Kosovo and  Lebanon.
  • Lebanese Gold Medal for meritorious service as UNIFIL Commander of Sector West.
