Профессор Майк Н. Шмит вступил в должность декана Колледжа по изучению вопросов безопасности и международных отношений в сентябре 2008 г.

Декан Шмит начал преподавать международное право в Центре Маршалла в 1999 г. Он занимал должность Директора Программы для руководящего состава, Директора Программы старших научных сотрудников и Директора-учредителя Программы углубленного изучения вопросов безопасности. В течение 2007 и 2008 гг. он руководил кафедрой международного права факультета Чарлза Стоктона Военно-морского колледжа США – одного из самых старейших и престижных высших учебных заведений. В 2006 г. профессор Шмит был приглашен работать на факультет сэра Нинья Стивена Мельбурнского университета. В период 1997-1998 гг. он вел научную работу на факультете права Йельского университета. До начала работы в Центре Маршалла он прошел двадцатилетний профессиональный путь юриста в Военно-воздушных силах США, где он специализировался на оперативных и международных нормах права.

Декан Шмит - автор многочисленных научных монографий по праву и военному делу, которые издавались в разных странах, например, Бельгии, Чили, Германии, Израиле, Италии, Норвегии, Перу, Швеции, Швейцарии, Голландии, Великобритании и Соединенных штатах Америки. Он является членом редакционных коллегий «Международного обзора Красного Креста», «Международного миротворчества», журнала «Военная этика», ежегодника «Международное гуманитарное право» и серии публикаций по международному гуманитарному праву «Мартинус Нийхофф». Как юрист он редактировал второй выпуск «Военных преступлений».

Профессор Шмит часто привлекается к работе многосторонних консультативных советов и рабочих экспертных групп, в том числе, по составлению Справочника по праву не международных вооруженных конфликтов (Международный институт гуманитарного права), Справочника по праву ведения войны с применением военно-воздушной и ракетной техники (Программа Гарвардского университета по конфликтологии) и по вопросам прямого участия гражданских лиц в вооруженных столкновениях. Он часто выступает с лекциями по законам и обычаям войны. Так в 2003 г. он выступил перед сотрудниками военно-юридической службы Сухопутных сил США на серии лекций памяти Вальдемара A. Сольфа, а в 2008 г. в Университете Халла на серии лекций Хилэр Маккубри.
