Alumni in Armenia Hold Seminar on “The Five-Day War in Georgia and its Impact on the Region”

Alumni in Armenia organized an outreach event on Oct. 10 in Yerevan, to discuss the recent five-day war in Georgia. The event was attended by about 50 officials from the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs, Parliament, the Police, the Emergency Situations Ministry, the Institute for National Strategic Studies, Academia, and other organizations, and included more than 30 Marshall Center alumni.
Dr. Gayane Novikova (EP 2002-4 and SES 2003-3), President of the Alumni Association in Armenia and Director General, SPECTRUM Center for Strategic Analysis, coordinated and moderated the event. Ambassador Andrea Wiktorin from the German Embassy and Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch from the U.S. Embassy made opening remarks and participated in the discussions. At the beginning of the event, LTC Robert Webster, U.S. Defense Attaché in Yerevan, presented MG Dr. Hayk Kotanjian, (SES 1998-2), Commandant of the MOD’s Institute of National Strategic Studies, and Advisor to the Minister of Defense, a letter of congratulations from Dr. John Rose, Director of the Marshall Center, on the occasion of his selection as Marshall Center Graduate of the Month for May 2008.
MG Dr. Kotanjian later spoke on “Problems on Karabakh Settlement and Democracy in the South Caucasus in the Context of the War in Georgia.” Dr. Greg Gleason, Marshall Center Professor of Eurasian Security Studies, spoke on, “The Five-Day War in Georgia and its Impact on the Region.”
