will be published by LIT Verlag in Hamburg in Summer, 2003. This fourth major
project, which examined the experiences of national contingents in the multinational
operations of IFOR and SFOR in Bosnia-Herzegovina, had 18 contributing scholars from
15 countries. The Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Federation published the Russian
edition of the book, Солдаты в миротворческих операциях in 2003.

The third book, Public Opinion on European Security and Defense: A Survey
of European Trends and Public Attitudes Toward CFSP and ESDP, was published in
January 2002 by Peter Lang Verlag in Vienna. This volume discussed how Europeans
understand and to what extent they support the European Union's Common Foreign and
Security Policy and the European Security and Defense Policy.

The second book, published by the department in 2001, is entitled,
Federalism and Decentralization: Perspectives for the Transformation Process in
Eastern and Central Europe. In writing this volume, an international team composed
of 22 renowned scholars cooperatively explored ways to promote the decentralization
of political structures in Central and Eastern Europe, analyzing and describing
models of federalism in sixteen country case studies that could help introduce or
strengthen federal structures in these countries. This book was also published by in
both the US and Europe. The Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Federation published
the Russian edition of the book, Федерализм и децентрализация в Центральной и
Восточной Европе, in 2001.
Military and Society in 21st Century Europe: A Comparative Analysis Date: 2000

The Research Program has completed four book-length publications as well as
a variety of articles since its inception. Its first book, Military and
Society in 21st Century Europe: A Comparative Analysis, was published
in 2000 by LIT Verlag in Hamburg and Transaction Publishers in the US. The book
explored the state of civil-military relations in countries across Eastern and
Western Europe and the Russian Federation in the period directly after the end of
the Cold War. The Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Federation published the Russian
edition of the book, Военные и Общество в Западной и Восточной Европе -
Сравнительное Исследование in June 2000. This book has been used in
teaching courses at the Marshall Center as well as at other European and American
institutions. It has also been translated into Spanish for use in the Chilean
military educational system.
