English and German as a Foreign Language Department
English and German for the Program in Advanced Security Studies (PASS)
The EFL/GFL Department offers English and German language classes for participants in the Program in Advanced Security
Studies (PASS) in the College of International and Security Studies. During the first six weeks of
the PASS core program, all levels of language classes ---basic, intermediate and advanced---are conducted in
two-hour blocks taught two to three times a week. The small class size allows for ample communication in the target language
that is facilitated by professional instructors tailoring the course to the students’ individual needs.
In the second part of the PASS, participants can choose a language elective. These electives are more
content-based with a focus on security studies vocabulary, the language of meetings, and skills development. The electives include
a capstone or final exercise during which, newly-acquired language skills must be applied. One example is the capstone for the
advanced English for security studies elective, which is a group negotiation exercise on a current security issue.
Other Language Courses:
The Department also offers the five-week intensive Security Studies Language Program (SSLP) for participants
who need to enhance their language competence in English or German prior to attending the PASS. This course emphasizes
the specific terminology and language skills development needed to effectively participate in PASS, such as group discussion
strategies and presentation skills.
The Combating Terrorism Language Program (CTLP) is a five-week intensive interactive language program specifically
designed to allow counter terrorism professionals to upgrade their English language proficiency in order to participate fully in the
Marshall Center’s Program in Terrorism and Security Studies (PTSS) and to join a growing international network of counter
terrorism professionals who use English as the medium for communication and cooperation.
The Language Testing Seminar (LTS) is a two-week graduate-level professional development opportunity for language
teaching specialists to practice preparing test items in accordance with NATO’s STANAG 6001. This seminar is conducted by a
multinational team of testing experts from the Bureau for International Co-ordination (BILC).
