Dr. Sabine Collmer, the director of the Marshall Center’s Research Program, opens a workshop examining democratic transformation in Georgia, Moldova, Kosovo and Afghanistan May 6 in Garmisch, Germany. The three-day workshop is part of a multi-year Research Program project that seeks to identify internal and external factors that help shape the successful transformation of countries seen as “critical” in terms of statehood into stable political entities with good governance.
Project researchers from Georgia, Moldova, Kosovo and Afghanistan presented the preliminary findings from their country studies and subject matter experts addressed a number of issues related to state failure and state building. The country studies and presentations provided the basis for the comparison of practices being applied today to help countries return from the brink of failing. A report on the initial findings will be released.
