Colonel Rudolph Byrne is the Chief of Staff of the George C. Marshall European Center for Strategic Studies.
As Chief of Staff, Colonel Byrne leads the Marshall Center support directorates, including Resource Management, Human Resources, Legal, Public Affairs, Protocol, Logistics, Engineering, Security and Information Management. Colonel Byrne also serves as the military commander for all the Marshall Center U.S. military personnel.
Before his assignment to the Marshall center, Colonel Byrne was the Commander, 314th Operations Group, 314th Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas. As commander, he was charged with the oversight of a DoD Formal Training Unit of 450 personnel, which trained more than 1,800 DoD and allied nation students annually, employing C-130E, C-130J, and C-21 aircraft, and involving aircraft and instructors at Little Rock AFB and Keesler AFB, Mississippi.
Colonel Byrne was born and raised in The Hague, The Netherlands. He entered the Air Force as a distinguished graduate from Air Force ROTC at Loyola Marymount University. Colonel Byrne started his Air Force career as an F-111F navigator before being selected for pilot training. After pilot training, he flew C-130s as a pilot/instructor pilot and served in a variety of positions at Rhein Main AB, Germany. While there he also deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield/Storm and Provide Comfort. He completed his assignment in Germany as the Chief, Airlift and Deployment Inspections, USAFE Inspector General at Ramstein AB, Germany.
Following graduation from the Army Command and General Staff College and the Armed Forces Staff College and completing his joint assignment to United States Central Command, Colonel Byrne was designated a Joint Specialty Officer. Colonel Byrne completed his squadron command at Training Squadron Thirty-Five, a joint Navy-Air Force advanced multiengine pilot training squadron at NAS Corpus Christi. Colonel Byrne recently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as the Air Force Liaison Officer to the Pakistan Air Force, in addition to being the Chief of the Coalition Air Cell in Islamabad, Pakistan.
