Mr. Roberts began his government career as a Private in the U.S. Army in 1968. He was commissioned in 1969, and served as an Army Officer for 25 years, with overseas assignments in Vietnam, Cambodia, France and Iran. He specialized in Light Infantry, Intelligence, Special Forces, and Foreign Area studies serving in a variety of positions in the field and in Washington.
Key among those assignments, Mr. Roberts served as a graduate student in France from 1973-74, as the last Foreign Area Officer in Iran in 1978-79, and as a Battalion Commander at Fort Bragg in 1987-89. In Washington he served on the Army Staff, in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and at the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency.
Colonel Roberts left active duty in 1992 to accept a position in the Senior Executive Service in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. There he handled a wide variety of Special Operations and Combating Terrorism portfolios, moving in 1999 to become the Director for NATO Policy.
In 2000, he was assigned to Brussels as the first Defense Policy Advisor to the U.S. Mission to the European Union. In 2003, he returned to the Pentagon to work on terrorism issues. From 2004 to 2005 he served as the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism. He joined the Marshall Center in 2006 as the U.S. Deputy Director.
Mr. Roberts lives in Partenkirchen with his wife Beth Wald. They have three children and two grandchildren.
