United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and German Minister of Defense Peter Struck will be guest keynote speakers here on June 11 to commemorate the Center’s 10th anniversary.
The Marshall Center was officially dedicated in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on June 5, 1993, at a ceremony hosted by General John M. Shalikashvilli, who was Commander of EUCOM at that time. Secretary of Defense Les Aspin and German Minister of Defense Volker Rühe were keynote speakers at the event, demonstrating the importance and significance of the Marshall Center as the cornerstone of U.S. engagement activities in the region. In early December 1994, the Marshall Center formally became a German-American partnership when the U.S. Department of Defense and the German Ministry of Defense signed a Memorandum of Agreement.
Today, the Marshall Center fosters a strong German-American partnership. With Germany and the United States as equal partners, the Center gains not only greater credibility but also a strong voice in the region: a united European-American voice.
