Colonel Peter Schneider Professor for Security Policy College of International and Security Studies
Colonel Peter Schneider, a career Army officer in the Swiss Armed Forces, has been a Professor for Security Policy in the College of International and Security Studies at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies since April 1, 2004.
COL Schneider’s expertise is in civil-military cooperation and European security policy issues from the perspective of a small, neutral country. He is also highly experienced in the design and conduct of training sequences and exercises at the operation level, and was from 1998-2006 the deputy exercise director and designer for a series of multinational computer-assisted exercises for peace enforcement and peace support operations run by the Swedish Armed Forces.
Prior to his work at the Marshall Center, COL Schneider was a project manager in the Swiss Army planning directorate from 2001-2004. He was responsible for several long-term planning projects, including Army After Next and Swiss Armed Forces XXI, for which he defined the overall structure of the armed forces and designed the future planning directorate and the joint staff. He was also responsible for defining the function of the Land Component Commander of the Armed Forces.
From 1993-2000 he was deputy chief of staff of the strategic and operational training directorate, responsible for training the joint command staff of the Swiss Armed Forces. During this time he also served as chief of staff of a logistics and territorial division from 1996-1998, and as commander of a logistics regiment from 1992-1995. In 1992-1993, he was deployed as the first commanding officer of the Swiss Medical Unit during the deployment and first phase of the UN Mission in the Western Sahara (MINURSO). From 1991-1992 he was a teacher and seminar leader at the Swiss General Staff College.
In his first military assignments, before becoming a career soldier, he commanded an infantry company from 1976-1980 and an infantry battalion from 1984-1986.
Prior to becoming a career officer, COL Schneider was managing director of Beringer Hydraulics in Zug, Switzerland from 1988-1990. From 1973-1988 he was an assistant vice president and division head for Sulzer Brothers Ltd. in Winterthur, Switzerland. During this time, from 1978-1980, he also worked as manager of the diesel engine division for Sulzer Brothers Ltd. Japan in Kobe, Japan. He was a surveyor for Lloyd’s Register of Shipping in London from 1972-1973.
COL Schneider attended the Marketing for Leaders post-graduate seminar at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1986. He attended the NATO Defense College in Rome in 1994 and the 140e Session Régionale de l’Institut des Hautes Etudes de Défense Nationale (IHEDN) in Nancy, France in 2000. He received his Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the Swiss Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1971.
