Lieutenant Colonel John Kane is a Marine Aviation Command and Control Officer and Foreign Area Officer, former Soviet Union.
In Marine aviation, LtCol Kane has served in various operational capacities with Marine Air Support Squadrons and Marine Tactical Air Command Centers in the Far East, United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Staff assignments include Executive Officer of a Stinger Missile Battalion, Operations Officer for a Marine Air Control Group, Director of Aviation Battlestaff Operations for a Marine Aircraft Wing, and Future Operations Officer for the Aviation Combat Element, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
As a Russian Foreign Area Officer, LtCol Kane has served as an investigator for the POW/MIA Field Office, Moscow, Russia; as Deputy Team Chief and Team Chief of arms control inspection teams with the On-Site Inspection Agency, European Operations in Frankfurt, Germany for the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty, the Dayton Agreement in the Former Yugoslavia; and as Assessments Officer, Office of the Verification Coordinator for Article IV of the Dayton Agreement in Vienna, Austria. He also served as the Marine Corps Attaché Officer, U.S. Embassy Moscow, Russia.
LtCol Kane currently serves as a Professor of Security Studies and Deputy Director of the Program on Terrorism and Security Studies, George C. Marshall Center, Garmisch, Germany.
LtCol Kane’s academic experience includes a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy, Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, Naval War College Non-resident Seminars in Strategy and Policy and in National Security Decision-Making, Defense Language Institute, the U.S. Army Russian Institute, and a Master of Arts degree in Diplomacy from Norwich University.
LtCol Kane’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Iraq Campaign Medal and the NATO Medal.
