January 30, 2008
As part of their ‘Dialogues’ series, the George C. Marshall Association – Romania organized a security roundtable entitled “Role and Place of Romania in the EU after the Lisbon Treaty.” More than 230 government security specialists and parliamentarians participated in the event held at the Military Circle in Bucharest, including 70 alumni, officials from the U.S., German and other embassies, and representatives of NGOs, business and the media.
Marshall Center Director Dr. John Rose opened the roundtable with an overview of the center’s recent events. Gunther Krichbaum, a member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) and an expert on EU enlargement and the countries of Romania, Moldova and the Ukraine, gave an overview of regional security issues and Romania’s role in the region. The second speaker, Dr. Mircea Geoana, a senator in the upper chamber of the Romanian Parliament and former minister of foreign affairs, discussed the internal structures of the Romanian government and spoke in detail about the upcoming NATO summit and the issues that NATO faces.
Romania has one of the largest numbers of graduates from the Marshall Center’s residential programs and one of the most active alumni associations. The George C. Marshall Association – Romania organizes a number of security cooperation events each year, addressing topics such as energy security, Black Sea security and human rights.
