Rear Admiral Neil Latham, Marshall Center Graduate of the Month December 2007
The Marshall Center Graduate Support Office has named Rear Admiral Neil Latham, Commandant of the United Kingdom’s Defence College of Management and Technology, George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies Graduate of the Month for December 2007.
RADM Latham attended the Marshall Center’s Executive Course (now the Program in Advanced Security Studies) in 1995. He was then selected as a member of the Marshall Center faculty, where he became Deputy Chairman of the Department of Security Studies. After his tenure at the Marshall Center Admiral Latham had command of HMS Sultan, the Royal Navy’s School of Marine and Aeronautical Engineering. Subsequently, he was appointed to his current position as the Commandant of the Defence College of Management and Technology (DCMT), one of the three constituent colleges of the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. In this position RADM Latham leads the DCMT’s efforts to improve the UK MOD’s business performance, including procurement, supply chain management, financial and commercial management, application of technology, and leadership, within the context of the defence and security environment.
Admiral Latham cites the most beneficial aspect of his attendance at the Marshall Center as the “opportunity to meet many people from Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, and to understand their cultures and thinking.” He adds that he hoped his contributions to the discussions and debates in the plenary and seminar setting at the Marshall Center “contributed to their understanding of the West as well.” He says that the broader understanding of international relations and security issues continue to serve him well in his current position, especially with the increasing numbers of students from all over the world attending DCMT.
The Graduate Support Office wishes RADM Neil Latham much continued success as he takes up his future duties as the Pro Vice Chancellor of Kingston University, London.
Beginning with March 2007, the Marshall Center Graduate Support Office has featured a Marshall Center Graduate of the Month.
