Marshall Center Alumni and Experts gather for Stability Operations Seminar
July 9-13, 2007
Seventy-seven Marshall Center graduates and other experts and practitioners from the Ministries of Defense, Foreign Affairs, other governmental institutions and organizations from 34 North American, European and Eurasian nations met at a week-long seminar, held in Garmisch from 9-13 July. The seminar brought together participants responsible for planning or executing stability, security, transition and or reconstruction operations in post-conflict environments at the strategic and operational level.
The seminar, led by the US and German Deputy Directors, Mr. James Q. Roberts and MG (ret.) Dr. Horst Schmalfeld, gave the participants the opportunity to hear distinguished experts and practitioners in the field as well as to take part in open discussions that focused on lessons learned and best practice. Working groups exchanged ideas and experiences and provided recommendations on the way ahead.
This seminar was the second in a “Community of Interest” series, providing excellent information exchange on lessons learned and encouraging long-term professional relationships and exchanges by offering access to the Graduate Knowledge Portal. Graduates within the Marshall Center network were able to re-connect with other alumni and forge new networks with other security professionals.
The seminar participants find their places as MG (ret.) Dr. Horst Schmalfeld (right) greets one of the speakers, Minister Hikmet Cetin, Former NATO Senior Representative in Afghanistan, at the beginning of the week.
Acquaintances are renewed as (left) Ms. Barbara Wither, Graduate Support, meets up with two participants from LPASS 2005-6, COL Milorad Corac, Kosovo/UN and Mrs. Elena-Dana Frunzeti, Romania.
