Over 60 Macedonian government officials, senior ministerial officials, international diplomatic representatives, NGOs, U.S. and German Embassy officials, NATO representatives, local university students and media attended the alumni roundtable, ‘Border Security of the Republic of Macedonia – Implementation, Current Situation, Problems.' The May 4 roundtable, held at Army House, included opening addresses by the Minister of the Interior, Ms. Gordana Jankulovska; the US Ambassador, H.E. Dzilian Arlet Milovanovic and the German Ambassador, H.E. Ralf Andreas Breth.
The Macedonian Alumni Association, who organized the event, invited Marshall Center Professor Dr. Jack Clarke and Senior General Inspector Sasho Kocev to discuss border security issues. Dr. Clarke’s presentation, entitled ‘Organizing for Secure Borders,’ emphasized among other things new initiatives in the US and the need for an inter-ministerial approach. Mr. Sasho Kocev, who is a police counselor for cross-border cooperation, in his presentation, ‘Implementation of the Concept for Integral border Security in the Republic of Macedonia,’ focused on the new structures and documents to establish integrated border management, discussing both lessons learned and shortfalls.
The program completed this year of roundtables organized by the Macedonian Alumni Association, who have successfully executed two programs a year for the past two years.
