Over 40 graduates attended the Alumni Leadership Seminar, “Combating Ideological Support for Terrorism,” held 17-21 July. Keynote speakers included General Carlton W. Fulford Jr., USMC (Ret.), Director, Africa Center for Strategic Studies; Dr. Mikhail Margelov, Senator, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and Dr. Ahmad Haris, Vice Rector, State Institute for Islamic Studies, Jambi, Sumatera, Indonesia. Alumni and observers from 22 countries and various ministries met to discuss such themes as undermining legitimacy for militant Islam, the hearts and minds dimension of the Cold War vs. the contemporary war on terrorism, challenges in forming a coalition and engaging the Islamic community. The seminar consisted of a combination of lectures and panels with discussion as well as working group meetings and reports. Graduates also engaged in a viewpoint exchange on future Marshall Center programs. The seminar gave the opportunity for graduates to examine new directions in the fight against terrorism as well as the ability to reconnect with Marshall Center professors, staff and meet current course participants. The Alumni Leadership Seminar is offered at least once a year to bring back graduates to discuss current security issues in the region.
