Marshall Center Senior Alumni Meet for Conference on Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation
September 21-22, 2008
In cooperation with U.S. European Command (USEUCOM), the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies hosted a distinguished alumni conference 21-22 Sept. 21-22 in Freising, Germany. A cross-section of 22 distinguished alumni from 15 countries, as well as German government officials and USEUCOM representatives, attended the conference.
At a dinner preceding the conference, keynote speaker RADM (ret.) Chris Parry, former head of the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre of the UK’s Ministry of Defense, laid the groundwork for the two days of discussions with a talk outlining a strategic view for the future.
U.S. European Command Deputy Commander VADM Richard Gallagher opened the conference with an overview of the issues surrounding combating weapons of mass destruction proliferation.
Three panels examined these issues more closely: The Ever-Expanding Threat and Strategies to Combat the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, moderated by Thérèse Delpech, Director of Strategic Affairs, French Atomic Energy Commission; Does Proliferation Matter: A Strategy Against WMD Proliferation, moderated by Dr. Jack D. Crouch II, former Deputy National Security Advisor to President George W. Bush; and Countering Proliferation of WMD, moderated by John A. Lauder, Vice President for Intelligence and Homeland Security Programs, Areté Associates.
This was the third conference of distinguished alumni the Marshall Center has organized over the past year. The first gathered parliamentarians to discuss parliament’s role in security and defense, and the previous one addressed energy security issues.
