English and German as a Foreign Language Department
Participants attending the Executive Program and Leaders Course may elect to take English and German language classes to supplement their courses in the College for International Security Studies. The language classes are one hour long and are taught 3-5 times a week. Students are placed in beginning, intermediate or advanced levels, depending their proficiency, as measured by a screening test administered before classes begin. The class size is small, allowing for ample opportunity to communicate in the language. Class activities are quite varied and are tailored to the students’ needs.
Extra English classes are offered two evenings a week and are held in the multimedia language lab under the guidance of one of the EFL teachers. Students can drop in any time the lab is open and work independently. They can choose from among a variety of language materials, including audiotapes and workbooks and the computer programs to develop their listening skills, reading skills, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
The Department also offers a four-week Balkans Democracy Building program. This program is aimed at enhancing proficiency in the English language while also familiarizing students with some of the content areas studied in the College for International Security Studies, such as the fundamental principles of democracy, civil-military relations, and post-conflict peacebuilding.
