Michael N. Schmitt Dekan und Dozent für Völkerrecht Institut für Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik
Michael N. Schmitt trat im September 2008 die Stelle des Dekans am Institut für Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik an.
Dekan Schmitt kam 1999 als Dozent für Völkerrecht ans Marshall Center. Daneben wurde er Leiter des Forums für Führungskräfte und des Programms für „Senior Fellows“ und war einer der Gründerväter des Forums für Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik. 2007/2008 war er Inhaber der “Charles H. Stockton Visiting Chair”-Gastdozentur für Völkerrecht am US-Naval War College, einer der ältesten und angesehensten Dozenturen am College. Schmitt war der „Sir Ninian Stephen Visiting Scholar“- Gastdozent des Jahres 2006 an der Universität von Melbourne und 1997/98 Gastdozent an der juristischen Fakultät der Universität Yale. Vor seinem Antritt am Marshall Center hatte er 20 Jahre bei der US-Luftwaffe als Experte für Operational Law und Völkerrecht gedient.
Dekan Schmitt hat zahlreiche Fachbeiträge zu Rechts- und Militärangelegenheiten in Belgien, Chile, Deutschland, Israel, Italien, den Niederlanden, Norwegen, Peru, Schweden, der Schweiz, den USA und dem Vereinigten Königreich publiziert. Er schreibt Leitartikel für die International Review of the Red Cross, International Peacekeeping, das Journal of Military Ethics, das Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law und die International Humanitarian Law Series (Martinus Nijhoff), und ist Mitherausgeber des juristischen Teils der zweiten Auflage von Crimes of War.
Dekan Schmitt wird regelmäßig in internationale Sachverständigenräte und Expertengruppen für juristische Fragen zu Themen berufen wie z.B. dem Handbuch zum Recht des nicht-internationalen bewaffneten Konflikts (International Institute on Humanitarian Law), dem Handbuch zum Gesetz des Luftkriegs und des Kriegs mit Flugkörpern (Harvard Program on Conflict Research) und der direkten Beteiligung von Zivilisten an Kampfhandlungen (ICRC). Als häufig geladener Redner zum Thema Kriegsrecht hat er die „Waldemar A. Solf“- Vorlesung des Jahres 2003 an der US Army's Judge Advocate General's School (2003) und die „Hilaire McCoubrey“- Vorlesung des Jahres 2008 vor der juristischen Fakultät der Universität Hull gehalten.
