Peter J. Armbrust

Peter ArmbrustMr. Armbrust was born in Vienna, Austria in 1943. In 1956, he emigrated to the United States, settling in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Canisius College in that city in 1965 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He attended Johns Hopkins University until 1970 and received his Master of Arts Degree from that university. From 1970 until 1972 he served in the Army as Intelligence Officer of the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division.

In 1972, he joined the East Coast Branch of the Defense Language Institute in Washington, D.C. as an instructor of German. In 1974, he moved to Monterey, CA when the DLI was consolidated on the West Coast. Until 1985, he served as an instructor, course development project officer (German Headstart Program, German Gateway Program, and German Professional Development Program), and department chairman in the German Department. In 1985, he was appointed Dean of the School of Germanic Languages, in 1989, Dean of Romance Languages, and in 1993, Dean of Asian School I.

During his tenure at the DLI, Mr. Armbrust has served in the following elected offices: President, local chapter of the National Federation of Government Employees; President, Federal Managers Association; President, Toastmasters International - DLI Chapter; Chairman, Handicapped Individual Employees Program Committee - DLI. He is also an active member of Rotary International.
