Croatian Alumni hold Energy Security Roundtable

The Croatian Alumni organized a roundtable entitled, "Energy Security, NATO, EU and Croatia" on Dec. 9, 2008. The roundtable, hosted by the Croatian Military Academy, ‘Petar Zrinski', drew an audience of 32 inter-ministerial security officials to include US Embassy personnel.

MG Mirko Sundov, President of the Croatian Alumni Association and Commandant of the Croatian Military Academy, opened the roundtable by encouraging a public debate in formulating an energy security strategy. MG Sundov was followed by Mr. Krunoslav Antolis, Secretary of the Croatian Alumni Association, who set the scene for the following presentations by giving a short overview of both NATO's and the EU's role in energy security.

Dr. Dragan Lozancic, seconded from the Croatian MOD to the Marshall Center's College of International Security Studies, was the keynote speaker with a presentation entitled, "Energy Security in Southeast Europe: Competing, Common and Complementary Interests." Dr. Lozancic's presentation covered the political, technical, commercial, environmental and security aspects of energy security issues.

Other speakers included General Ivan Kapular who introduced Prof. dr.sc. Brigadier Dario Matika. Brigadier Matika, Head, Institute for Research and Development of Defense Systems, discussed a private/public initiative with the MOD in the field of energy security and critical national infrastructure. Mr. sc. Dejan Kosutic ended the program with a presentation on information security and critical national infrastructure and its relation to energy security.

The presentations were followed by questions and discussion. After the program's conclusion the alumni association held their annual meeting.
