Azerbaijan ONE 29 Oct 2009 web write-up

On 29 October 2009 the Marshall Center Alumni Association of Azerbaijan, in conjunction with the Marshall Center, the MOD and U.S. Embassy Baku held a roundtable entitled “The Current Situation in Afghanistan.”

Fifteen Marshall Center alumni participated in the roundtable, representing MOD, MFA, Ministry of National Security, Ministry of Emergency Situations, and the Border Service. The event took place in the Park Inn Hotel, Baku.

Mr. Donald Lu, chargé d’affaires, U.S. Embassy Baku, made the opening remarks. COL Vidadi Askerov (EP 1997-1), a Branch Chief in the MOD’s International Cooperation Department, also welcomed the participants.

Prof. James Wither, Marshall Center Professor of National Security Studies, spoke on “The Military and Security Aspects of the Current Situation in Afghanistan.”

Dr. Ann Phillips, Director of Studies for the Marshall Center’s Program for Security, Stability, Transition & Reconstruction, spoke on “The Political and Economic Aspects of the Current Situation in Afghanistan.”

Dr. Phillips and Prof. Wither fielded questions and comments, and the roundtable was followed by refreshments.
