English Language Enhancement Courses
The Partner Language Training Center Europe at the Marshall Center offers 5-week intensive English Language Enhancement Courses (ELEC) before the Program on Applied Security Studies (PASS), the Program on Terrorism and Security Studies (PTSS), and the Program on Countering Transnational Organized Crime (CTOC).
These specialized courses are designed to enhance participants’ English language skills, especially their ability to communicate at a professional level on security topics. Instructors tailor curriculum and vocabulary to each of the individual courses, focusing on relevant vocabulary acquisition, presentation skills, public speaking practice, and discussion strategies. Class size is limited to 8 to ensure maximum interactivity and personalized feedback from instructors.
Through authentic reading materials, presentations by guest speakers, classroom discussions, and videos, participants become familiar with the terminology used in the programs they are to attend while improving their understanding of the nature of other security threats affecting the global community. The ELEC also enables participants to join an expanding international network of security professionals who use English as the medium for communication and cooperation.
English language prerequisite: Candidates should have a score between 60 and 80 on the English Comprehension Level (ECL) test or the American Language Course Placement Test (ALCPT).
Language for Diplomacy
Language for Diplomacy is a three week course which is designed to assist Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) officials develop highly-polished, executive-level communication skills directly related to their professional English language needs. The course incorporates lectures and discussions on security-related topics which are conducted by Marshall Center professors and staff.
Participants complete tasks which further their competence in English along different dimensions, such as targeting various audiences both orally and in writing, and analyzing written and spoken English from various sources. Participants should have an advanced level of proficiency in English. The class size is limited to no more than 8 to optimize participation and individualized feedback.
